We've just had IE 9 released and now the final version of Firefox 4 has come out too and spoilt IE's thunder. First impressions: brilliant! Easy upgrade, its fast and it looks great to boot.
Having been complaining about the nightmare of upgrading to IE9 just days ago it's a whole different world upgrading from Firefox 3.6 to Firefox 4. IE 9 required multiple application closures, it completely removed Windows Explorer whilst installing so I couldn't do anything, it required a reboot, it came with a crappy online installer and more. Firefox 4 upgraded in literally seconds, informed me which add-ons were no longer compatible and then went ahead and installed the newer versions of them. Not a single problem and the whole process took around a minute. Why can't all software installs be this good?
The actual performance is great too. I have recently been complaining about Firefox 3.x's start up times as it has been getting slower and slower (my fault I suspect, I have a fair few add-ons and a ton of bookmarks) but Firefox 4 starts in a flash. Page's seem to load faster, Javascript performance is improved plus you can take advantage of hardware acceleration now. Mozilla have their own impressive set of demos to test the new performance capabilities.
The Firefox demos are cool but not quite as polished as Microsoft's.
The interface is excellent. Like IE9 they've gone down the Chrome copying route with a tabbed interface that sits along the application title bar. It look's nice and the new application menu, which looks a little like the Office 2010 application menu, is cool too. The new App Tabs are a good idea but really all they boil down to is smaller tabs - useful for things like Gmail that you might have open all the time but don't want to take up precious tab space. One thing I'm not so keen on (and I'm really nit picking here) - the new location of the stop/reload button and the home button is at the wrong end (right) of the URL location bar - not really a problem, just something new to get used to.
Oh! Shiny!
More good news! Firefox 4 is supporting the correct CSS3 properties. No more -moz-border-radius, you can just use border-radius now which will work in IE9 too. It's the same story for all the other -moz- CSS3 properties too!
There's a ton of other really nice touches as well, most of which I haven't even begun to discover. It's great to see Mozilla and Firefox continuing to fight their corner so well in the browser wars and it's another kick in the teeth for Microsoft as this really trounces IE9.
